Sisters in Sound mentorship project - 2009/2010

The mission of the SAJE Sisters in Sound mentorship project is to encourage and promote the participation of young women in the art of jazz both educationally and professionally, through a mentoring program linking them with established women musicians. The mentorship program is:
THE PROTEGES are currently active performers or tertiary level students embarking on a career in the music industry, and generally are youth at risk coming from disadvantaged communities with often no resources for creative arts development. Participation requires commitment to attend all workshops and to actively engage in the mentoring activities with their mentors and peers.
THE MENTORS are professional South African musicians who constitute the main facilitating group, while other musicians join the mentoring program as needed. Mentors include: Amanda Tiffin, Lisa Bauer, Monique Hellenberg, Nomfundo Xaluva, Judith Sephuma, Gloria Bosman, Monique van Willingh, Muriel Marco, Nicky Schrire, Deborah Tanguy, Vuyo Sotashe, Sandile Gontsana, Debi Mari, Sue Barry, Natalie Rungan, Denay Willie and Chantal Willie, among others.
The Workshops operate monthly as an organised complement to the mentoring process, and focus on such topics as:
In May 2009 we launched the SAJE Sisters in Sound mentorship project. At this special launch we were extremely fortunate to be able to feature and utilize the talents of the jazz band Helen Sung & NuGenerations who traveled to Cape Town courtesy of the US Consulate in Cape Town and the Rhythm Road Tour to Africa 2009 in conjunction with Jazz at Lincoln Center. The band comprised of Helen Sung (piano), Quincy Davis (drums), Saundra Silliman (vocals) and Lonnie Plaxico (bass). The launch took the form of a workshop/demonstration conducted by Helen and Saundra in the Baxter Concert Hall, and by Lonnie and Quincy at the SA College of Music at the University of Cape Town - followed by a question and answer period.
Thanks to a generous grant from the National Arts Council (NAC), SIS activities we have rolled out during 2010 are monthly workshops for female musicians on specific instruments, run by female clinicians, plus an all-female jazz concert at the NASSAU CENTRE in Cape Town as part of their Jazz at the Nassau series. We are currently seeking further funding for this project.
The first priority of the SIS project is to continue the mentoring initiative launched in May 2009.

- A mixture of technical tips; running a music business; marketing a band’s product; managing the band and clients; recording, copyright and publishing; working in theatre and studio; as well as writing and arranging music, the challenges of teaching music, networking, practical teaching tips, choosing repertoire, organising gigs, finances, contracts, etc.

- We are looking to provide guidance and support for young women in jazz (and other music forms), whether they are instrumentalists or vocalists, professionals or just interested …
- We would also like to see more female clinicians available to participate in general mentoring programs and workshops as offered by SAJE. Some activities we hope to achieve in the not too distant future are workshops for female musicians on specific instruments, run by female clinicians, and the possible formation of all female jazz ensembles.
- We are currently compiling a list of mentors for instrumentalists and have had some names forwarded by members of the jazz community. If you are interested in becoming a mentor, or would like to be mentored, please forward your name and instrument played (or sung) to [email protected]
